BMW F82 M4 Wing – Things to Know Before Buying

Last Updated: August 27, 2024

I recently added a new mod to the M4 that I never thought I would add. A wing. Yes, not a spoiler, a wing that I needed to get holes drilled in the trunk for. During this whole journey of shopping for one, I learned a lot of things about how to source a good one, how to save money in the process, and how not to get shammed by something that looks good and would save you a ton of money, but in reality, is absolute garbage.

As you can see, the Vorsteiner VRS GTS wing flows very well with F82 M4 lines, which is the main reason I went with this particular wing. However, finding the right wing wasn’t easy or a pleasant experience since I tried to save money and thought I was getting a great deal. So, let’s dive into it.

BMW M4 Wing vs Trunk Spoiler: Which One Is Right For You?

First things first, to mount a wing to your trunk, you will have to drill your trunk lid. That means you can’t just take it off once you are done, and it might affect your resale value. The value might increase if you put a brand-name wing (like Vorsteiner) and of good quality. The value can also decrease if the wing is a no-name from eBay, AliExpress, or Alibaba.

Since this is a big modification to your vehicle that’s not easy to reverse, think this one through. I got the Vorsteiner VRS wing since it makes the car look “finished” and flows well with the body lines. I had the BMW dealership install the wing since their work carries a warranty, and if any issues occur, I would bring the car back. Also, having the dealership install the wing will give peace of mind to whoever wants to buy your car.

Spoiler, on the other hand, is easy to attach and remove. All you need to attach it is enough 3M tape, and when the time comes to remove it, a heat gun paired with Goo Gone is all you really need.

The main differences between the two are the looks and functionality. The wing looks much more aggressive and provides more downforce if you track your BMW M4. However, the wing might not be for you if you don’t care about the looks and do not go to the track other than occasional drag strip appearances.

Pros of Getting a Wing For Your F82 BMW M4

The pros of having a good-looking wing on your F82 BMW M4 are obvious:

  • Aesthetically improves the car’s appearance, making it look aggressive and “complete.”
  • Better handling, stability, cornering, and even road grip.
  • If you race on the track, increased traction when taking corners can benefit your track times.
  • Many wings are adjustable, making fine-tuning your aerodynamics needs easier.
  • A good wing can increase the value of your vehicle, but not by much.
  • If you don’t care about the engineering aspect of wings’ functionality, you can use it as a table to snack on 🙂

Cons of Getting a Wing

  • You must drill your trunk, which must be done by a professional or can become dangerous if not mounted properly.
  • It’s much higher cost than regular trunk spoilers.
  • It can reduce fuel efficiency.
  • If you are building for straight-line speed, you might not want a wing on your car since it will slow you down.

Where to Buy an F82 BMW M4 Wing?

There are a few ways to go about buying a wing for your M4. You can buy a brand new OEM GTS wing from BMW parts store, get a Vorsteiner from Vivid Racing, Vorsteiner, IND, etc. You could also try and get yourself a good quality used wing, especially since F82 cars are very popular in the aftermarket space, so there are always deals out there. And the last but not least place to look for your next wing are the Chinese sites such as AliBaba or AliExpress. Let’s get into more details on reasoning for each below.

Reputable BMW F82 M4 Wing Manufacturers and Resellers

This one is the safest but the most expensive route to take. I ended up going down this route because I got royally screwed by a Chinese parts supplier that lied about more things than he told the truth.

If money is not tight for you, and you like saving time and not having headaches, just go for a reputable company that will send you solid quality wing from the very beginning. It’s ok to buy fake carbon fiber aesthetic parts elsewhere on the vehicle. However, the wing itself can be a very risky bet.

Here is a short list of great companies to buy from down below. Just keep in mind that there are many more, but these are the ones that I researched myself and had good experience with:

  • Vivid Racing: Great prices, super fast shipping, and good people overall (my wheels arrived at my door in 3 days).
  • IND Distributions: great brand reputation, quite expensive, very good customer service.
  • BimmerPlug: Good prices and good quality alternatives to branded products, which means that you will be saving money.

Buying a Used F82 M4 Wing

If you look hard enough, you can find a used wing for your M4. This way, you could save well over 50% of the retail price. Sure, it might have some imperfections due to regular wear and tear, but structurally, I would trust a used Vorsteiner wing more than a brand new AliExpress product.

Best places to find a used wing:

  • eBay: Check for “used” or “used – like new” conditions. Otherwise, you’ll get cheap knock-offs offered to you.
  • Facebook marketplace: Since it’s fairly limited to your locality, there will not be too many options, but a good place to watch.
  • Facebook F8X groups: If you join F8X parts groups, you will surely find something that fits your needs.
  • Forums: Places like Bimmerpost have listings of items for sale; I know quite a few folks who successfully purchased their parts from other forum users.

Just keep in mind that there are a lot of scams going around, so you will need to do your due diligence in figuring out if the seller that you are buying from is a good one. It’s much easier to do on platforms like eBay where you can see seller ratings, but not so much on Facebook Marketplace or Forums.

Cheap Knock-Offs: eBay, AliBaba, AliExpress, etc

This option is usually a hit or miss, with more times of being a miss than a hit. Misleading item descriptions and lies in general are very common on these platforms when items look “too good to be true.”

Example (true story): I found a Vorsteiner VRS replica wing on eBay that was supposed to be of “great quality and true carbon fiber. ” The best part was that the seller stated that it was “true real carbon fiber, unlike these other sellers on eBay.” Since the wing was only $400, I thought I would give it a shot.

It was promised that the wing would be built out of real carbon fiber, but when I received it, I realized it was much heavier than any carbon fiber parts I had encountered. It was obvious that the wing was made out of fiberglass and had a CF pattern overlay. Depending on how well the CF overlay was laid, that might not have been too big of a problem, so I was ok to live being lied to once.

However, after 4 hours of sun exposure, the wing started to bubble up. I immediately contacted the seller, who told me to “find a local shop that will fix it,” which is pretty much the same as saying it’s my problem. I filed a claim and got my money back, then went right ahead and got a real Vorsteiner wing.

You can hear similar stories from many people in the car community, so if you decide to buy from any of these super cheap sites, please research and conduct background checks on the companies that sell these parts. I’m yet to find a good seller, but I’ll continue trying and post an update when I find one.

Best F82 BMW M4 Wing Style

When selecting a wing for your BMW F82 M4, firstly, you need to know what you need the wing for. Is it aesthetics? Are you going to go to the track a lot? Either way, you are looking to spend between $1000 and $4000 for a good-quality wing. But here are the most popular choices for many BMW F82 M4 owners who are “winging” it.

  1. BMW GTS Wing: This factory-designed wing is engineered for optimal aerodynamics and downforce, making it an excellent choice for those prioritizing track performance while maintaining OEM integrity.
  2. Vorsteiner VRS: Known for its blend of lightweight materials and aggressive styling, the Vorsteiner VRS wing offers enhanced downforce without compromising the car’s sleek lines. I have this wing, and I truly love it.
  3. APR Performance Wing: APR wings are highly regarded in the motorsport community for their adjustability and robust construction. These wings allow for precise aerodynamic tuning, perfect for serious track enthusiasts who must fine-tune their car’s behavior at high speeds. It’s a more aggressive-looking wing than the Vorsteiner VRS.
  4. Adro Wing: Adro provides a modern, cutting-edge design that focuses on both aesthetics and performance. Their wings are often characterized by sharp lines and high-quality materials, making them a popular choice for those who want to make a statement while still gaining performance benefits.
  5. Varis VRS: The Varis VRS wing is a premium option, offering exceptional build quality and a design that complements the M4’s aggressive stance. Known for its balance between form and function, Varis wings are a great choice for those who demand top-tier performance with a unique look.
  6. Other Options: In addition to these popular choices, many aftermarket brands offer wings that cater to various needs, from full carbon fiber constructions to adjustable elements that allow customization based on specific driving conditions.

Ultimately, the best wing for your BMW F82 M4 will depend on your priorities—whether you’re looking for maximum downforce on the track, a visually striking upgrade for the street, or a versatile option that balances both.

Bottom Line

Now that you know more about what is involved in getting your F82 BMW a wing, I hope you can make your decision easier. There are quite a few things to consider before getting one, especially since it’s irreversible once your trunk is drilled.
